To
tow a trailer or caravan you may now need to take a towing test!
Towing
training is available with the Chesterfield Driving School. For more information
contact us.
All
drivers who passed a car test before 1 January 1997 retain their existing entitlement
to tow trailers until their licence expires. This means they are generally entitled
to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM (Maximum Authorised
Mass).
If you passed your car driving test after January 1997, you may
now need to pass a separate test (licence category B + E) to tow a trailer or
caravan weighing over 750kg MAM . Most horse trailers, cattle trailers and caravans
already weigh this much unladen.
The Towing Test includes an off-road
reverse manoeuvre, a controlled stop, uncoupling and coupling and driving on the
road.
The test is based on the LGV driving test and lasts for approximately
one hour. You may also wish to obtain a copy of the DVLA
Information Leaflet about changes in entitlement to tow trailers. |
